The hands that keep the show moving
The discipline
What is production carpentry?
Production carpentry is the hands‑on, problem‑solving expertise that brings a show to life. It’s the team that builds, installs and looks after the physical elements of a production from scenery, structures, mechanical components and everything in between. Working closely with production and technical management, production carpenters make sure the set works exactly as it should, day after day, in every venue.
Case Study
Starlight Express Build at the Troubadour Theatre (Wembley Park)
This project was delivered by Datum with a team of around thirty production carpenters and scenic artists over a twelve‑week on‑site build. During the construction phase we set up a purpose‑built workshop in the front‑of‑house area, where the team worked through 8km of stick timber and more than 1,500 sheets of 8×4 plywood. As you can see below, we built the set, the backstage areas, and the full infrastructure needed to turn the venue into a bespoke, fully functioning theatre.
Alongside the staging and backstage build, we also production‑managed and created the entire Front of House experience including what we’re fairly sure must be a world record for the number of mirror balls in a single venue (sadly never officially verified). Once all zones were complete, we relocated our workshop into gazebos outside, which allowed us to remain backstage for the duration of the previews and right through to press night.

The business case
Why early planning pays off
Bringing in a Technical Director or Lead Production Carpenter early is one of those decisions that saves you money all the way down the line. A bit of prep upfront (which you can claim TTR on) means the set is built to move smoothly, safely and with the right number of hands. Skip that step and you end up paying for extra crew, slower get‑ins and outs, additional trailers and mid‑run repairs that you can’t claim TTR on.
The latter happens all to often and it pains us to see good money going to waste. We would always recommend investing a little in prep upfront to avoid spending a lot more later on with labour and fixes once the show is open.
Did you know?
Production carpentry is one of the most misunderstood roles in theatre, and arguably misnamed. Despite the title, many production carpenters only work with wood around 60% of the time, spending the rest handling steel, aluminium and complex mechanical systems. When the production manager isn’t on site (which is common on tour) the No.1 production carpenter leads the stage and keeps the operation moving. They’re also the only department that must understand how sound, lighting, automation and set all work together in order to fulfil their role.
It’s an exceptionally skilled role, far beyond what many assume and certainly not “just crew”, even though crew remain essential and do huge amounts of the literal heavy lifting.
